Welcome to the April Nottingham Farm Animal Vet Society!
April NFAVS was established in 2021 when April Vet Soc was formed following the creation
of the April Cohort at Nottingham in 2020. We aim to bring together all students in the April
Cohort who are interested in farm animal medicine. We pride ourselves on running a wide
range of talks, trips, and events throughout the academic year to help build on the teaching
in the curriculum. We also aim to encourage as many people as possible to discover the joy
of farm animal medicine by making all our trips and talks as accessible to all interests as
possible.
This year, we have had a wide range of events organised by us for students:
Trips: This year, we have had trips down the university’s very own ‘Centre for Dairy
Science Innovation (CDSI)’, which is the on-site 450 cows milking herd. We have
also had trips to GLW feeds and to Sherwood Forest for a Deer post-mortem.
Talks: We have a wide range of talks throughout the year, such as New Grad talks on
a range of farm species, treatment of specific conditions, differences in farm vetting
from across the world, and many others!
Practicals: We have run practicals throughout the year, such as practising
administering fluid therapy to a range of species.
Barn Party: Each year we hold a ‘Barn Party’ at the beginning of the year to welcome
our new freshers and allow people to meet each other. This is a great night on
campus where we have a live band and other activities all night.
Teaching: We run a session for all students to practice farm animal handling on the
university's small holding in order to prepare people as well as we can for the
practical exams in the first year.
Membership is granted to not just FAVS but also the equine and small animal sub-societies
with the purchase of an April Vet Soc Membership. This also gives you discounted rates on
ticketed events throughout the April Vet Soc Calendar, including the end-of-year ‘Vet Ball’, so
it's definitely worth the purchase price. The membership cost ranges from £22 for one year
up to £75 for the whole five-year course.
